Depends on what the goals are. I hear "web based Limewire", and that
says to me: Limewire functionality that doesn't require Java to be
installed/enabled. If that's the goal, I would say it would be best to
make requirements minimal (i.e., no AJAX without a fall back).

But, if you're just trying to emulate the LW app in the browser (not
sure what the point of that is, to be honest), then I'd say
AJAX/applet is your best bet.
