I thought more along the lines of a simple, human-readable format based on magnets or a 
feature in LimeWire that would allow me to browse and download the folder containing a 
file I found on Gnutella.

I can't say I'm a big fan of the torrent file format. It's bulky, it is not really 
compatible with HTTP transfers and Gnutella's download mesh and I cannot edit it using vi.
Taking the Azureus source code to add Bittorrent support to LimeWire would certainly boost 
LimeWire's popularity, which would be a good thing for you.

I'm not really convinced though, that the torrent file format itself is such a clear 
winner. Sure, it's very popular in connection with the Bittorrent protocol and a lot of 
piracy groups have switched from IRC to Bittorrent - however I just don't see why e.g. 
sourceforge.net should rather set up a bittorrent server than use a magnet link (that is 
easily created on the fly) pointing to several other http servers which are currently 
hosting a certain file.
In my opinion, all magnet links would need to compete with torrent files is an Apache 
plugin or a php script that can manage alternate locations. And for legitimate purposes, 
magnet links have a lot more potential than the bittorrent file format.
