My own experience shows that once an address starts getting spammed from 
unpredictable random sources, you can't stop it later. Those spams are sent 
by unsmart robots running on milions of infected PC worldwide and that are 
constantly exchanging their address book by spamming each other.

There's nothing to do, even if you block completely an email address so that 
all emails will go to the dustbin without being ever read.

As long as PC's infected by viral spamware will be allowed to send unlimited 
number of emails to anyone without needing manual confirmation (meaning that 
a security mechanism will be needed to be implemented by senders), these 
spams will continue.

I see no solution for unmoderated lists, except than moving the list to 
restricted access mode:
- allowed to a subscribers list only.
- the other solution being an automatic subscription after 
*anual*confirmation of an auto-reply by the list itself (which will generate 
a confirmation image containing a code that the user must supply).

Note that the identity of senders is easy to fake: this system can be 
defeated by robots that are just scanning the emails read from the list or 
in public archives, and that may steal the identity of an allowed sender.

The only parade against that would be to check the domain or IP range of the 
effective sender. But regular allowed subscribers that are roaming from site 
to site using distinct ISPs (or whose IP address changes everyday) may 
suffer... Those that can only send an email using the SMTP or web service of 
another ISP than the one they use to receive their email would be excluded 
as well:

I am one of these users that encounter all these cases simultaneously, and I 
really don't know how to use a predicable sender IP address, and I need 
everal ISPs between home and work, or between cities where I go, and all my 
ISPs offer me only temporary IP address
