Yup, we could.  Greg's been suggesting this idea.  Perhaps we'll actually
get around to doing it sometime soon. :)

Exactly -- the extreme optimizations that are required in order to make
patch processing bearable on the CPU make it very difficult to come up with
a workable solution.
