Oh, I did some research into this a few years ago. Now lets see if I
remember the details...

I found mention of type "i" in wide usage within a year of the initial
gopher announcement. If memory serves it started being used by one
server and quickly adopted.

...and that's where memory fails me. I believe it was discussed in some
mailing list write-ups on gophercon '94. Now where did I put those
archives?
