From a sysadmin perspective, I run logwatch which will
email me every time someone tries a remote login.  

After a single weekend I've gotten over 100 emails
with scripted attempts at ssh entry.  going through
them all looking for more meaningful activity is
pretty boring.

More than anything else, it's some peace of mind that
the amateur bad-guys won't get in.
