can't initialize iptables?

hello,

i am totally new to guarddog (firewalls in general). this is what
happens after i click Apply/OK button:

Using iptables.
Resetting firewall rules.
Loading kernel modules.
Setting kernel parameters.
iptables v1.3.2: can't initialize iptables table `filter': Table does
not exist (do you need to insmod?)
<..last message repeated many times..>

guarddog 2.40
kernel 2.6.12-gentoo-r10
iptables compiled as a module (modprobed)
ipchains 1.3.10, 1-Sep-2000

any hints?
