First goto the newsgroup settings page (Configuration -> News: server, groups, pull - or Cntrl + N - and click on the Newsgroups tab. Highlight each group in turn and click the Settings button. Enter the number of days you want to keep posts for the group in the 'Days to keep articles (Since loading the article)' box and click you way back out. Note that the days Hamster keeps articles runs from when you downloaded them, not from the date it was sent. To manually purge all the groups just click on File -> Purge all groups.
