For the record, after a discussion in news.software.nntp, the perl5 GD 
module is properly found at configure time on FreeBSD:

checking for Perl version 5.004_03 or later... /usr/local/bin/perl
checking for Perl module Encode... yes
checking for Perl module GD... yes
checking for Perl module MIME::Parser... yes



It was a transient problem due to the installation of liabsl.
