I had the same problem when I went from the source tarball (working from 
'make' and on) to the CVS version (working from './gen' and on).

My (working) version numbers are:

automake (GNU automake) 1.8.4
autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.59
ltmain.sh (GNU libtool) 1.4.1 (1.922.2.34 2001/09/03 01:22:13)
