How to test a new translation?

Hi! When I'm doing a new translation, can I include my po-file in my local CVS directory and see how the translation looks when the program is running? I tried to put the po in the sources po-dir, added 'sv' to configure.ac and ran the CVS-install commands. The po goes to the right directory at installation, but when I start Ayttm with 'LANG=sv_SE LC_ALL=sv_SE LANGUAGE=sv_SE /usr/local/bin/ayttm' I get no swedish. Even tried language code sv, no success either. Any hints?
