You shouldn't need to be root for this.  What is it that doesn't work
when not run as root?

You'll need to get the libtool-libs package (could be different on
different systems)

ltmain.sh should be in ayttm's root level directory (where configure.ac is)

Also, what versions of autoconf and automake do you have?  We've seen
autotools break backwards compatibility in almost all their releases.
