More on this: It's probably a heap corruption problem. Tweaking the code
cause the problem to move, I now get a crash when the client attempts to
connect, before the newly introduced code is executed (it crashes on the
first packet from the client).

I'll try to track down malloc and free usages to see if a buffer
couldn't be deallocated twice or something like that. Nobody else have
such an instability problem?
