How much of the blurb that already fills your screen do you read
when you register a channel?

This is my preference - to do an onjoin message in the channel if it
has no successor and the founder's nick is within a week of expiry.

Isn't this exactly what dg already said and what I said I didn't
like, and gave 3 reasons why, in the email you just replied to? ;)
I might still implement it as an option though, if a lot of people
think it makes sense.

OK you've clarified it a bit by saying "highest access, oldest
user".  The thing is, I still think that's a bit much for the
average user to comprehend if they can't already get a handle on the
successor feature.

I'd still like to hear more from channel founders.. the suggestions
so far have been..

What to do about channels which are about to be deleted because
their founder's nick is about to be expired:

a) Give the channel to the successor.  If there isn't a successor
   set then give it to the user who is highest on the access list.
   In case of a tie in access levels, give it to the oldest nick.
   If there's no one on the access list, delete the channel.

b) When the channel is a week or so away from being deleted, start
   to warn people on-join about that, so they know that they need to
   find their founder.  Other than that, don't do anything - the
   channel can only be saved if someone finds the founder.

c) As (b) above but then if it still ends up in deletion, do (a).

d) Keep the current behaviour: channels are deleted when their
   founders' nicks are, without warning or notification to channel
   users.

If you know any founders of active channels who aren't on this list,
don't forget you can show them a gmane URL so they can just load it
in their web browser and give you their opinion.
