If your bopm runs on your home machine, then yes, then it does sound like you need to configure a smarthost for your mailserver. I recommend postfix over sendmail as a mail server. The postfix package available in Mandrake easily allows you to easily use a smarthost. As configuration of a mail server is not really a suitable topic for this list, you should feel free to drop me a line if you need further help getting a postfix && mandrake && smarthost configuration set up.
