locked log files on a cygwin install

Look's like I am unable to cat, less, more, etc the log files while IRSSI is
running in my cygwin environment.  Has anybody else experienced this or
found work arounds?  I very much would like to continue using IRSSI but in
my work environment, searching through logs is a must.  Disconnecting,
searching the logs, and reconnecting is not a viable solution in this case.
