   Thanks for the tip. An updated pkg-config fixed the problem. 
Unfortunately, the openssl libs/headers are no longer found automatically by 
irssi's configure script, despite pkg-config reporting their presence and 
correct location. Including the appropriate cppflags and ldflags fixes this, 
however.
