Passing XMPP/Jabber through a proxy

I'm running jabberd 2.0s9 on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Server and
attempting to pass it through HAProxy, but it consistently drops the
connection after about a minute. I've tried updating 'keepalive' in
c2s.xml and the timeouts in the HAproxy listener, to no avail. In
fact, no matter what I set the timeouts/keepalives to, it always gets
disconnected in the same amount of time.

It's been a while since I looked at this issue, but I'd like to delve
back in and resolve it, so if anyone has experience passing
XMPP/Jabber through a proxy and/or configuring jabberd's keepalives
I'd greatly appreciate some suggestions.
