I have had a similar problem (see
http://mail.jabber.org/pipermail/exodus/2004-November/000445.html)

We also use SSL. I wonder if it's possible that SSL has anything to do
with it.  Peter has been unsuccessful in duplicating the problem.

Peter, have you tried with SSL enabled?
