Messages are delivered to arbitrary clients, or so it looks

Hi,

I've got clients on my computer (pidgin) and on mobile phones (im+). The
problem is that when somebody sends a message, it may be received by any of
these clients. It may be that two messages sent one after another are
received by different clients. Is there a way to force them being received
by only one client? By all the clients? What makes them being received by
one client, but not another in the first place? Is there a supposed
"workflow", concerning receiving messages?

Just in case, a question on unix.stackexchange.com I asked:

http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/163698/which-jabber-client-receives-messages

Regards,
Yuri
