In my /etc/xinetd.conf i have:
     v6only          = no

running opensuse 13.1


to test if this server is working, you can do:
luuk@opensuse:~> telnet opensuse nntp

Connected to opensuse.

200 Leafnode NNTP Daemon, version 1.11.10 running at 
opensuse.example.com (my fqdn: somewhere.example.com)
