New messages on server not seen

I know that there are new messages on my two servers, but Leafnode runs
through both and says there is nothing new.

I would normally attach a debug log, but:
(a) my distro uses systemd;
(b) syslog's config has been replaced by a directory, with no obvious
candidates to change.
