This is a lot better (CPU usage is down from 27% to 11%).

It's still not as fast as openssh.  I've attached a new profile; I may 
try to play with the the code if I find some more free time. (The opt 
version is with optimizations enabled).

Don't get me wrong, though -- this is quite good now.
