OK, tried that.  Unfortunately the debug version worked fine!
Only the version compiled without the debug flag gives the buffer errors.

At the moment, setting "sftp:protocol-version 2" for these particular
destinations is working with both the ubuntu default 4.0.6 and the 
4.2.0 I'm compiling.  Which might be a clue.

I'll see if an strace shows anything useful.
