I tend to write single-line messages much more often than multiline messages, 
so I need SEND more often than NEW LIINE. I find it very comfirtable to be 
able to swap the functions of ENTER and CTRL+ENTER. The latter enters a new 
line, and simply ENTER sends. This can be configured in Kopete and Trillian, 
and I believe it's even a default in the official client. That, and the fact 
that it has been discussed often, as you said, probably indicates that this 
feature is wanted by many people. I think it should be configurable somewhere 
within the options, even if the default stays as it is.
