Sudden outbreak of HTML

I've been chatting to someone for a few weeks with Licq 1.3.4
(installed as a Fedora RPM).  I believe they are using AOL's AIM
client on Windows.  This was working fine until yesterday, when
all their messages suddenly started looking like this:

FACE="Arial" LANG="0">Hi<FONT sml="AgHSRp8=">:D</FONT> </FONT></HTML>

They swear they haven't changed any settings (and neither have I).
Has AOL suddenly changed the protocol or what?  Is there a setting
I can change to ignore it all?

I notice the messages look OK in the history window (although they all
end with excessive vertical space) although to be honest I'd prefer if
it didn't obey the command to make the font smaller...
