Try checking "Auto-focus message" under Events settings. This controls 
whether new message tabs get focus.

 From what I could see, that setting is not just used for auto-popup 
messages. I will try and rewrite so tabs opened by the user always gets 
focus. But for now the above setting should be a quick workaround for you.

I guess since the second tab isn't focused, the message is not marked as 
read so pressing middle button again only tries to open the same 
message. Please try the above workaround and if it works better when 
tabs get focus as they are opened.
