Follow-up Comment #1:

Maybe you tried that at a time when sf.net had problems with its database
servers, which is sometimes the case.
I just tried to register a new account and it worked without problems:

Welcome, xxxxxxxxxxxx! 
Your account has been created. Please _wait_ for the confirmation email.
Don't forget to change your MLDonkey preferences.
