Png Vs. Gif

Hi all,

I am new to MRTG. I am running mrtg-2.9.0pre23 in WinNT and Win2K. My *stupid* question is: 

how do I generate the images as "gif" instead of "png"?

I already changed the 
$main::GRAPHFMT="png";
to 
$main::GRAPHFMT="gif";
but it only change the file extension to gif. When I look at the content, it's png format.

P.S.: I read through the FAQ, but couldn't find the answer.
