[mrtg] Trying to change the graphing on MRTG

I just started out using MRTG and I wanted to learn how it is working by adding another line to the basic in&out charts, I want to show on the graphs the throughput, i.e. just the in and out added together.  I figured out most of the mrtg script and I get lost when it calls rateup.  Is there information and specs on the rateup.exe file and/or someone who can explain pretty quickly how to add more info to the graphs..
