And MRTG doesn’t run constant.  It only runs for a second after I run the startup command.  Any ideas?

By default, mrtg runs for just one pass.  You can either run it via cron or use the runasdaemon setup.

Cron has the advantage that the config files are read every 5 minutes, so it reflect changes to your configuration faster.
Runasdaemon has the advantage that mrtg doesn’t need to parse the config files for every polling cycle.  That’s a significant consideration when polling a couple of thousand devices.
