mixed linux 2.4 and alpha tru64

We're doing some testing using single cpu amd athlons, under Linux 2.4 (we're using the gm-1.5_Linux_beta3 release) 64b 2 mbyte pci cards, and a 16 port switch. We thought we could interoperate with our exisiting alpha cluster, running "GM build ID 1.3.1", but the mappers don't seem to see each other (eg the Linux boxes see each other, and the alpha boxes see each other, and they agree they see two switches, but they don't see the other architechture). References to any manual are welcome.
