It appears that I was working with an even older executable (not GM
2.0.5/MPICH-GM compiled)

I am a little confused. What exactly is the point of the GM shared library?
 
I just had to change from GM 2.0.5 to 2.0.8 and it appears that all the
applications I have still need to be re-linked.
 
Isn't the GM implementation contained within the shared lib?
