Nagios 3.0a1 Available For Testing

I'm happy to announce that the first official alpha release of Nagios 
3.x is now available for testing!  You can download the alpha release at:

Many changes have been made with Nagios 3 that should offer plenty of 
improvements over the 2.x and earlier releases.

In case you're wondering... host checks are now run in parallel and 
scheduled host checks can actually help performance, rather than hurt 
it.  The host check logic was completely rewritten in the Nagios 3 code 
with performance in mind.

Since there are way too many changes to discuss here, I suggest you read 
the "What's New" section of the documentation for the full rundown:

The documentation is still in flux a bit.  I have documented all the 
changes in Nagios 3, but I am still in the process of editing/rewriting 
all the pre-existing docs.  It's a big task, so it'll take a while for 
this to be completed.

The new docs will hopefully help to lower the learning curve for new 
Nagios users.  A quickstart guide has been put together than should 
allow new users to install and configure Nagios to monitor their local 
machines in 15 minutes. :-)  Check it out at:

Also, there is one change to Nagios 3 that I have not yet started - the 
extension of timeperiod definitions to allow for more flexible 
scheduling.  This will be discussed on the nagios-devel list in the near 
future, and the new timeperiod code will appear at some point in the 
alpha release process.

Remember, this is an alpha version, so there are bound to be plenty of 
bugs that will be discovered.  Don't replace your stable Nagios install 
with this alpha version.  You are, however, urged to install alongside 
your existing Nagios install and see how it performs in comparison.
