Provavelmente voce tem um script que efetivamente faz  o backup, seja por
comando de operador ou por agendamento (cron).

Se o seu script não grava log, faça-o gravar. Depois observe no arquivo de
log alguma coisa que o TAR vai gravar, se der erro. Mantenha no log somente
a última execução, para o arquivo não crescer muito e nem dar o mesmo erro
mais que uma vez.

A partir daqui voce tem duas possibilidades:
a) farer um plugin que testa se tem esta mensagem de erro no arquivo de
log...
b) mandar um trap se der mensagem de erro
