What hardware and OS are you on? If you're on ProLiant hardware, have 
you tried the net-snmp extensions that ship with HP's ProLiant Support 
Pack? If you're bound to Debian (which they unfortunately do not 
support), it may still be worth trying the "closest match" from their 
binary offerings (RHEL, SLES) to see if you can get it running.
