I think something alone those lines is going to be your best approach.
Use SNMP to initiate the action, and have some mechanism for reporting
the results, rather than block waiting for the results immediately.

Probably the most relevant official work would be the DisMan Script MIB.
That's probably overkill for your requirements, but an examination of
the MIB structure they came up with (and perhaps a browse of the mailing
list archives) might give you some ideas.
