Yes, it's a more general problem rather than an IRIX-only issue and this 
is exactly why I've started a more general discussion :-)

I'm not convinced libelf is the best choice for retrieving *kernel* 
values (even if the kernel file happens to be in ELF format). Also, 
since libelf is not guaranteed to be available on the target system, 
we'd need alternative code anyway, unless you're proposing to bundle 
this LGPL code with net-snmp.

I'm still looking for feedback on the core question (prefer runtime over 
compile-time platform handling?).
