64-bit counter timers

I've compiled net-snmp 5.3 on my FC2 box. I've started it running in an
attempt to get 64-bit counters. I can get the counters, but I noticed
that they don't update consistently. It seems to take 22-26 seconds in
between updates (I setup a quick while loop and watched with a 1 second
sleep in between).

Is this indeed the case, that the counter as reported by net-snmp only updates on a fixed or random interval? If so, is there a way to tweak that? Even Ciscos update their 64-bit counters within 10 seconds. Having a 25 second update time is a huge bit of granularity when you measure things on 5 minute boundaries.

Any information would be appreciated,
Philip
