SNMP on Mac OS 10.4.7 Server

I have spent weeks on this one, and this is a plea for help from the
Macintosh community.

I have several G5 PPC Xserves running Mac OS 10.4.7. This ships with
net-snmp v5.2.1.

In the institution, we have a campus-wide snmp monitoring solution.

Having done all the set-up config for the Xserves, next to nothing is
produced by the snmp daemon when they are polled by Orion (our network
monitoring package), snmpwalk via Terminal or other MIB browsers.

I have downloaded several different versions of the net-snmp software from
sourceforge.net. Getting them to install and compile on Mac OS X Server is
another matter all together..... So, my questions are:

- Are there *any Xserve owners out there who are successfully monitoring
their servers with snmp?

- Which version of the net-snmp software should I be using and is there a
definitive guide to compiling and installing it? (Better yet, is there a DMG
anywhere?)

- When upgrading the software, where do you install it to on Mac OS X Server
so that it will superseed the existing 5.2.1 version?

I will produce a guide if I¹m able to ever get this working and will post to
all the lists.
