net-snmp 5.4 on aix 5.3

Trying to compile net-snmp 5.4 on an aix 5.3 box as per the readme.  It
compiles fine, but behaves badly without the -without-kmem-usage.  With
the -without-kmem-usage, it won't compile.  Can anyone shed any light?
