In my opinion, the "best approach" depends upon your network size, complexity and requirements. The primary argument against master agent - slave agent is complexity. However, the master agent can perform functions like protocol translation that would not be possible in the traditional master-slave approach. Also, the master agent can save bandwidth at the management station by accumulating polling data from the sub-agents and sending it to the management station in one shot when polled. This can be substantial if your network (or managed nodes) is huge. So, if you have a varied, large, hetrogeneous network, you may want to consider the master agent - sub agent approach. In smaller, simpler, homogeneous networks, you may want to consider independent agents.
