Do you have any debugging code in your subagent? It might be useful to turn this on, and see if there is any difference between what it sees for an internal "monitor" request, and that from an external SNMP GET. Or failing that, turn on packet dumps ("snmpd -d"), let it run one monitor probe, then query it manually (snmpget). Maybe the raw packet dumps will throw some light on things.
