unbounded memory use in net-snmp (5.1.2 up to 5.4)

Hi,


I've searched the recent messages in the mailing list for memory leaks 
and other similar terms and found nothing helpful.
Here's my situation:
I have net-snmp 5.4 running on

- RH8 and CentOS 4.4 systems (compiled with no options to configure)
- Solaris 10. (compiled without embedded-perl because of perl issues)

I also have some copies of 5.1.2 (the official CentOS version) installed
as binary from the CentOS distribution.

In all of these installations, both snmpd and snmptrapd suck up memory 
until the system runs out of swap space and dies.
I have had to resort to restarting snmpd and snmptrapd every night to 
keep it manageable.

I originally thought the embedded perl may be the problem, but I have 
removed all embedded perl modules, and on Soalris it was never installed.
For example, on a CentOS system running net-snmp 5.1.2 from the binary, 
the following was the contents of snmptrapd.conf:

After three/four days, here is the output of top:

  5111 root        16   0   550m  541m 1456 S    0 13.4 188:04.32 snmptrapd

550meg? it started out as 12m.
The same thing happens to all my installations of net-snmp. It happens 
equally to snmpd and snmptrapd.

I have taken to restarting all my snmp services every night to keep my 
systems from crashing. snmpd and snmptrapd have both taken systems down 
by grabbing more memory than I had swap space.

No one else seems to have this problem, at least there's no mention of 
it that I can find in this mailing list. I clearly have a problem, but what?
Wht does no one else have this problem? The only thing even vaguely 
common to my installations is gcc, and there I have several different 
versions in play.

Anyone have a suggestion/clue/idea?

Thanks a lot for whatever suggestions anyone may have. This is driving 
me nuts.
