snmpd high CPU usage - polling rate?

Hello all,

I'm running Net-SNMP snmpd version 5.1.2 on Linux 2.6.11.  I have a
client application that queries the localhost for eight values from
IF-MIB using a single GetRequest packet.  The query rate is 4Hz.  The
snmpd process is using at 10-13% of a 1.7GHz P4.  If I back off the
polling rate I can reduce the CPU usage significantly.

Now, I know that the vast majority of people are using polling rates far
slower than 4Hz.  Is type of CPU usage expected at this rate, or do I
have some other problem to track down?  Before I try using the latest
version (which is more difficult than it should be because I'm using a
Buildroot/uClibc toolchain that is sensitive to version changes), I'd
appreciate an opinion or two from the experts on whether or not polling
at this rate is reasonable for snmpd in the first place.  Yes, I really
need the data this often.
