New MIB implementation

Hi all, I want to implement a new MIB to monitor some variables on my system. After I've written my MIB, how may I set/get values on that snmp new OID? I need to use net-snmp api in my application or I need to run command line snmpget/snmpset cmd? Is this the right way to proceed?
