As with many embedded devices they're using squash-fs as root filesystem. So the only way to change the Linux-System is to get hold on the build environment, they used to build the install-images. The docs mention the build-environment and that you can get it to customize your images, but the HP-Support knows nothing about it. That's why we can't drop the snmp binaries and libraries at the usual location, but need to place them somewhere else witihn the fs - hence I thought running it within a chroot environment would solve the problem. Another way might be to compile a customized version of the snmpd that uses other locations within the fs.
