Ok, lets say I'm having a bad day and am not understanding you fully. I'm
not sure what you mean by "run the agent". Snmp is running, started from
/etc/init.d. I don't see a way to change the startup options in the script.

isis:/var/log # snmpd -DmibII/interfaces
No log handling enabled - turning on stderr logging
registered debug token mibII/interfaces, 1
isis:/var/log # mibII/interfaces: ETHTOOL_GSET on eth0 speed = 1000
mibII/interfaces: fallback to mii for eth1
mibII/interfaces: SIOCGMIIPHY on eth1 failed
mibII/interfaces: ETHTOOL_GSET on eth0 speed = 1000
mibII/interfaces: fallback to mii for eth1
mibII/interfaces: SIOCGMIIPHY on eth1 failed
[init_smux] bind failed: Address already in use
Error opening specified endpoint "udp:161"
Server Exiting with code 1

I know I am being dense here, but if you wouldn't mind spelling it out for
me I would appreciate it.

Nope. Run the *agent* with that flag, i.e.

  snmpd -DmibII/interfaces ...
