SHA-512 for auth protocol

Is there any work or thoughts being put into implementing SHA-512 (and/or SHA-256) for the authentication protocol ? It has been rumored that SHA-1 may not be an approved hash algorithm for the upcoming FIPS140-3 security specification. Approved hash algorithms are listed in FIPS180. I had a look at the latest FIPS180-3 draft spec and SHA-1 still seems to be listed (at the moment). SHA-512 is the most secure hash algorithm specified. However, the security world is moving on from SHA-1 as other more secure hashes become accepted (eg. SHA-512). So, is any there any work or thoughts being put into implementing SHA-512 for the authentication protocol ???
