Thanks for your quick reply.

There is no file MakeMaker.pm inside /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8/ExtUtils/.

Following are the contents of this directory.
# ls /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8/ExtUtils/
Command.pm  Constant  Constant.pm  Miniperl.pm  typemap  xsubpp

This ought to be part of a standard perl install.
Have a look in /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8
Can you see a directory 'ExtUtils' ?
Does it include a file 'MakeMaker.pm'?
If not, what does it contain?
